Ryleigh had her first Washington gymnastics meet with other gyms in attendance. The meet was held at a casino operated by the Squaxin Island Tribe. The Tribe has their own COVID rules, separate from the State of Washington, but they were just about as strict. Only one parent per gymnast could attend. We were all spread out in the viewing area, and it worked well. But, getting in was miserable. We all had to wait outside, socially distanced, in the 40 degree weather while temperatures were taken and COVID contract tracing information (just in case) forms were completed. Fine for the parents who could have on wintery clothes. Not so fine for little girls in their leos, warm-ups, and flip flops.
The event center was about the size of a large high school gym. They were able to set up similarly to how we were set up at a Virginia Beach high school for a couple Ocean Tumblers meets. The girls wore their masks anytime they were not competing. It was well managed and it just felt so good to do something nearly normal for the kids and for the adults.
Ryleigh had a terrific meet, as you can see in the video. She surprised herself and the rest of us by coming in 1st place for all of Level 3. Way to go, RyJo!!
After the meet was over, Jip and RJ drove the hour to the casino to pick up Ryleigh so I could stay for the next session and do my good gymnast parental duty by helping with the meet. Hopefully by the next meet at the casino in March, Jip will be under fewer military restrictions and we can figure out how he can also help with equipment set-up or take-down.
